In the last decade, there is no other academic major in the healthcare field that has gone through a more drastic and thorough progression than Nursing. As a field of study, Nursing has evolved from one that focuses on training the student to provide assistance to physicians and other healthcare professionals, to one that develops the individual to take on direct, critical roles in the delivery of care to individuals, families, and communities. Core subjects in this degree focus on the building an extensive array of knowledge, skills, and abilities, usually through intensive, and highly independent learning activities. A great bulk of these activities consist of writing tasks that range from research critiquing to argument papers, to quantitative and qualitative research papers. For each of these writing tasks, it is necessary for the Nursing student to apply rigorous effort and employ brilliant aptitude. A nursing student cannot rely on writing ability alone to complete these academic writing requirements that he or she is bound to come across with in the subject courses that he or she undertakes. Rather, the students should be able to correctly select the right academic resources to use and precisely select the material within those sources that are of relevance to the given task. Nevertheless, the ability to express oneself clearly and articulately in writing is essential to a nursing student. Even if the student is able to gather all of the necessary resources and pick out all the useful material in those resources, he or she would not be able to complete the writing task if the skill to synthesize useful materials in a seamless, fluid manner is absent. Thus, it is imperative for aspiring nurses to develop strong written communication skills in order to pass all the requirements that he or she would be expected to prepare.

Furthermore, graduate and postgraduate degrees in Nursing require the accomplishment of more demanding writing tasks from the student. These degrees which are required for the nurse to achieve higher status in the profession, explore the various roles that nurses can play in the healthcare field. Thus, the student is often expected from the onset of applying for advanced degrees to have a strong background on literature behind the specific specialization that he or she is intending to be involved in.


Degrees on healthcare are diverse and far-reaching, from undergraduate level courses of study on specific healthcare areas such as nursing or physical therapy to advanced degrees that focus on healthcare in general. These advanced degrees on healthcare focus on the management of healthcare systems, personnel, and clients. As such, they often require students to take on course subjects that demand a great deal of background knowledge in the different healthcare industries and effective and insightful writing aptitude. A student in healthcare management, healthcare systems analysis, health economics, or any other healthcare major must have a strong command of both general academic language and language that is specialized to the healthcare field. This is because core subjects in healthcare degrees usually task students to discuss various concepts in writing, and furthermore apply these concepts to simulated settings. These applications include determining the cause of the problem in the operations of an existing or hypothetical healthcare institution, or debating the ethics of the actions of a particular healthcare professional and detailing the appropriate course of action that the institution managers should take. Many of these writing activities are set on standards that do not merely ask the students opinion, but ask the student to consider both academic and professional literature as well as the students’ critical thinking abilities in synthesizing a thorough and logical response supported by strong pieces of genuine evidence. Another common writing task given to students studying for a degree in healthcare are quantitative research papers that specifically attempt to determine the effectiveness of a particular innovation to a given healthcare system. These quantitative papers require both considerable time and resources to complete, since students are often expected to visit different sites in order to gather information. This information are usually gathered by observing personnel or by going through the records of the institutions visited. These tasks also require considerable knowledge in statistics and statistical computer applications such as SPSS. In most occasions, universities assume that students who are enrolled in advanced healthcare degrees are already competent with statistical tools and techniques, and therefore expect them to be able to apply such techniques and technologies in practice with minimal to no support.
