While the term proofreading is often used interchangeably with editing, they are not the same process. Proofreading comes after editing and is the final review of a paper, essay, article, thesis or dissertation. The proofreader is employed to read the text in full in order to find any mistakes in spelling or content that may have been overlooked by the editor. Some people use proofreading as a very general read of the document in that they basically skim over the paper to find any glaring mistakes. A skilled proofreader will do the opposite. They will look for any small detail that might have been missed. The task of proofreading also enables the editor to focus more on style and content which allows the proofreader to direct their attention to grammar and spelling.
